In the late 1970s, a vibrant tapestry of faith and hope began weaving its intricate threads through the green fields and promising yet challenging terrain of Dublin’s North-West. Mounthview Blakestown Parish emerged as a focal point of this remarkable journey, where new parishioners arrived with dreams amidst a stark landscape devoid of essential amenities. With just two daily buses connecting them to St. Joseph’s Hospital, the community’s resilience shone brilliantly against adversity.

Community Triumphs Over Boundaries
Before the dawn of Mountview Parish, the land was divided among different parishes, with boundaries drawn along roads and neighborhoods. Gardaí from Blanchardstown watched over the east, while Lucan took charge of the west. Challenges loomed large, but so did the indomitable spirit of the community. In the midst of this, “Willie’s Pet Shop” emerged as more than just a store—it became the heart of the neighborhood.
A Beacon of Hope Arrives in 1996
Amidst the trials and tribulations of the 1980s, hope was on the horizon. The arrival of the Blanchardstown Centre in 1996 heralded a transformation, signaling a turning point for the area. The community held its head high, exemplified by the grand “Mountview and Blakestown Grand Easter Parade” in 1986—a testament to the enduring spirit of its youth.
St. Philip the Apostle Church: A Symbol of Unity
November 30, 1980, marked a moment of immense pride and unity as Archbishop Dermot Ryan handed the keys of the newly constructed St. Philip the Apostle Church to Fr. Dennehy during the first Mass. This splendid church became a testament to the community’s faith and dedication. (www.mountviewblakestownparish.ie/)
Memorable Moments in Our Parish
Throughout the parish’s history, moments of significance left their indelible marks, from the historic papal visit in 1979 to the cherished memories of the first Baptism, Communion, and wedding ceremonies. Even the blizzard of 1982, though challenging, brought out the very best in the community, strengthening bonds.
From Bricks to Community Spirit
The church itself evolved over time, a reflection of the community’s dedication. With each passing priest, from Fr. Dennehy to Fr. McDowell and Fr. Hogan, the church underwent transformations, both in aesthetics and function, embodying the spirit of growth.
Huntstown Parish: A New Spiritual Chapter
In 1981, Huntstown Parish was born, bringing a new spiritual chapter to the region. The culmination of this journey manifested in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, dedicated in 2002. This beautiful church fulfilled a cherished dream and became a vibrant space for worship and community gatherings. A pinnacle moment arrived in 2007 when the parish celebrated the canonization of Saint Charles of Mount Argus, a testament to their enduring faith. (www.huntstownparish.ie)
Hartstown Parish: Green Fields to Thriving Community
In 1977, Father Liam Hickey embarked on a remarkable endeavor—creating Hartstown Parish from green fields. The initial challenges included a lack of essential amenities and infrastructure. The transition from fields to a thriving community began with the construction of Oakview and later encompassed various neighborhoods. St. Ciaran’s Parish officially formed in 1979, initially with few residents and limited facilities. The community’s determination led to the establishment of a temporary church and the growth of recreational clubs. Over the years, the community grew, schools opened, a community center became a reality, and a permanent church was built in 1987. A secondary school followed in the early ‘90s. Key figures like Matt Moran and Father Liam Hickey left lasting legacies, shaping Hartstown Parish’s history. (www.hartstownparish.ie/)
A Journey of Faith Continues with SVD Team
Since 2017, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) Team has been guiding two parishes with three churches —St. Philip the Apostle Church, The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and The Church of Mary, Mother of Hope (www.hunstownparish.ie/littlepace/.) In 2023, they extended their care to St. Ciaran, Hartstown. Under the SVD’s devoted stewardship, these parishes have continued their mission, nurturing their communities and contributing to the development of Dublin’s north-west.
This incredible journey, from barren landscapes to vibrant communities, stands as a testament to the transformative power of faith, unity, and unwavering determination. As we reflect on this odyssey, let it inspire us all to overcome adversity and build a brighter future, bound together by the ties of faith and community spirit.
