In the tapestry of life, there are those who thread their way through it with grace, purpose, and unwavering faith. Among these remarkable individuals, one finds Alan Tomas Nasraya, born in 1948, the youngest of six siblings in a family of four sisters and two brothers. Currently, Fr Alan serves in the role of active retirement, a season of life that allows for reflection and contemplation. His path to priesthood began in 1972, and from that point on, he has made significant contributions to his ministry. His work has taken him across borders and cultures, primarily in Indonesia and Mainland China.

But what inspired a young man like Alan to become a priest? His reflection on this reveals a cultural undercurrent—a time when many were exploring Religious Life. It was, as he describes, “going with the flow.” Yet, his journey would take him much further, and in a different direction, than he initially envisioned.

His association with the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) stems from the Society’s unique apostolate offering in China during that period. It was this opportunity that led him to embark on an extraordinary journey of faith and service.

Among the moments that shaped his path, the encounter with a Chinese Jesuit seminarian during his teenage years stands out. It was a moment that would influence the course of his life, a whisper of destiny that would lead him to a life of ministry.

For Fr Alan, the most fulfilling aspect of his work as a priest is the sharing of the message of the Risen Jesus, a message that imparts profound meaning to life. His ministry is a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance to those he serves.

Yet, the journey has not been without challenges. Living and working in a remote and isolated area in Indonesia was his initial trial. Here, he learned to rely on the local people, who became his community.

Learning Chinese, a formidable task, was another hurdle, but the SVD offered support. This enabled him to become qualified as an English teacher at university level in China. His proficiency in English became a bridge to connect with the Chinese people.

While in Mainland China, constant surveillance by the Public Security Bureau was a pressing concern. The community of foreign priests in the same situation provided a support system, standing together against the challenges they faced.

Throughout his journey, Fr Alan has drawn inspiration from historical figures saints, and fellow priests, including St Josef Freinademetz, Pope John XXIII, and his District Superior in Beijing.

Their faith, humility, and dedication serve as a compass guiding their own approach to ministry.

Looking to the future, Fr Alan’s interest lies in the re-evangelization vision of Pope Francis. He sees it as a vital path to address the evolving challenges in the modern world.

Fr Alan’s message to the Congregation and the wider community is a call for new approaches to tackle new problems, a reflection of his adaptability and dedication to ministry.

In a world yearning for deeper faith and spirituality, Fr Alan Nasraya’s story reminds us that faith, resilience, and unwavering commitment can light the path toward a life well-lived. His extraordinary journey in the priesthood has left an indelible mark on those he has served, a testament to a lifetime of faith and dedication.
