In 1940, in the heart of Liverpool, a young boy named Peter McHugh embarked on a life’s journey that would lead him to become a devoted missionary priest. Inspired by the respect shown to diocesan priests and moved by a sermon from a Columban priest about their missionary work, Peter set his course. Guided by faith and the encouragement of Fr. Norman Davitt, Peter’s path took shape.

Over the years, his missionary journey encompassed diverse experiences – from seminary life in St. Richard’s Seminary, Hadzor, to the novitiate in Donamon, studies in Dublin, and final vows in Techny. His ordination on January 15, 1966, marked the beginning of a remarkable adventure.

As the seminary in Hadzor closed its doors in 1969, Fr. Peter embraced the role of novice master, a task that offered valuable insight into SVD spirituality. His stint in the Philippines as an assistant novice master was eye-opening and instilled the Gospel’s fundamental truth – the uniqueness and dignity of every individual as a child of God.

Fr. Peter’s mission continued through various roles, including rector of the formation house in Teignmouth Rd, secretary for formation/education in the generalate, participation as an Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre (AJSC) member in Steyl, spiritual director in Nemi. His interactions with the SSpS and SSpSAP Congregations in the Philippines forged lasting connections, which deepened further when living in the AJSC (Steyl), the first-ever SVD and SSpS community.

Now, in semi-retirement in Donamon, Fr. Peter reflects on the past 71 years. He acknowledges that his journey wasn’t without its trials and regrets, yet he’s witnessed the life-changing work of SVDs in challenging circumstances. As he contemplates his spiritual voyage, he finds solace in the Trinitarian prayer, a daily companion that reminds him of the loving invitation to a deeper union with the Divine:

“Through him, and with him, and in him,

O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory and honour is yours, forever and ever. Amen.”

Fr. Peter’s lifelong dedication to the SVD mission stands as a testament to faith, service, and an unwavering friendship with the Divine, transcending the boundaries of time. His story echoes the spirit of love and devotion that continues to inspire those he meets along the way.
