Last week, the long-awaited new ‘Safeguarding Children Policy and Standards for the Catholic Church in Ireland’ was released. This updated policy introduces significant changes, particularly in its structure, which now includes three core standards instead of the former seven. These standards are crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of children within the Church. The three core standards are:1. Leadership, Governance, and Accountability 2. Nurturing a Culture of Safeguarding 3. Responding Pastorally and Reporting According to Civil and Canon Law
The development of this new policy was a comprehensive process involving the National Board and a dedicated steering group. They gathered insights and experiences from numerous individuals who have been engaged with the Church’s ‘One Church Policy’ over the years. This collaborative approach included input from thousands of volunteers who have supported the Church’s safeguarding ministry, all aiming to create a safer and more welcoming environment for children and young people.
The dedication and hard work of these volunteers and contributors were acknowledged in the Second Review of Child Safeguarding Practice in the IBP. This review, requested by the former Provincial Council and completed by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland in December 2021, highlighted significant improvements. It concluded that:
“The Society (SVD) has now addressed the deficits that were apparent in the 2013 Review, and the Provincial and the members involved with safeguarding, along with the Provincial Secretary, are to be commended for the improvements in awareness-raising and in child safeguarding practice that have taken place since then.”
This new policy and the accompanying standards represent a major step forward in the Church’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding children. The focus on leadership, creating a safeguarding culture, and adhering to both civil and canon law ensures that the Church continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its youngest members. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this vital work, demonstrating that our commitment to safeguarding is both genuine and effective.
