The Ordination of Fr Cyril Ma SVD

Posted by

Cyril’s ordination (15th April 2015) turned out to be a wonderful occasion for the members of the SVD, for the SSpS, for the members of the Chinese Catholic community and for his many friends but especially for Cyril himself. The weather was lovely for the Bus drive down to Donamon from Pembroke Road, from Maynooth and elsewhere. Bishop Kevin Doran, the new Bishop of Elphin was the ordaining prelate, He was assisted by Fr Ray Milton, the P.P. of Knockcroghery and by Deacon Sean O’Donnell, (Derry).

The choir of Kilbegnet and the choir of the Chinese Community provided the beautiful music. Pat Byrne SVD, spoke after the Gospel, thanking God for the gift of Cyril and for the joy that he had brought to us with his ordination.

A nice moment during the ceremony was when Fr Norman, our oldest confrere at 94, and one of the first members of the Society to join the SVD, 75 years ago, helped to vest Cyril in the priestly garments after which Cyril approched the Bishop for the annointing of hands and for the presentation of the Book of the Gospels and the chalice and paten to be used for the celebration of the Eucharist. Another highly emotive moment occurred when, following the laying on of hands, by the bishop, all of the priests, in turn, proceeded to lay their hands upon Cyril, while invoking the Most Holy Spirit to come upon him.

After the mass, Fr Cyril spent time blessing the people individually before joining everybody for lunch in the Cuisle dining room. In a nice gesture, Cyril took the time, during the afternoon, to visit and bless our sick, Bro Brendan in Roscommon and Frs Casey and Kom in Maynooth!
